Understanding the dynamics of human gait, including both motions and forces, is vital to promote human health and performance.

Conventional gait analysis requires laboratory-based experiments and physics-based simulations to quantify gait dynamics and analyze how dynamics change with treatment, training, injury, and disease. However, the high costs associated with experiments and simulations has confined the use of gait dynamics to small-scale research studies.

The NBA is launching a league-wide biomechanics program with motion capture labs to be installed at the training facilities of all 30 teams within a year.

Details were shared in a league-wide memo this afternoon. The protocols have been developed in consultation with the NBPA as well as sports medicine and performance experts. Provisions for such a screening program are codified in the current collective bargaining agreement, requiring players to participate in up to four assessments per season.

Human pose estimation models can measure movement from videos at a large scale and low cost;

OpenCap, a freely available service for researchers to measure movement from videos, mitigates this issue using a deep learning model—the marker enhancer—that transforms sparse video keypoints into dense anatomical markers.

This paper critically appraises the utility of markerless motion capture in the context of skill development and sports performance enhancement.

If markerless motion capture is to be useful in a profiling or monitoring capacity, the amount of measurement error needs to be smaller than the amount of movement variability over iterative performance trials. Current evidence suggests that it is unlikely that any existing markerless system satisfies this requirement. The resolution of this issue would, in principle, enable technical errors to be more easily pinpointed and performance variation to be better explained.

Brain Activation During Maximum Concentric and Eccentric Knee Extension Muscle Contraction

In spite of mounting evidence indicating that concentric and eccentric knee extensor muscle contractions might have special nervous system control strategies, the differentiation of brain frequencies between concentric and eccentric movements and how the motor cortex programs this contraction has been less studied.
